Athens, GA--The University of Georgia College of Pharmacy will host the annual Howard C. Ansel Symposium on Saturday, August 26, at the College of Pharmacy. This year’s symposium is entitled “The Practice of Addiction Pharmacy: A Practitioner’s Guide.” The day-long event was created in 2003 to honor Ansel, dean of the College from 1977 to 1991, for his notable contributions and ongoing support of the pharmacy profession. It is co-sponsored by the Ansel Educational Fund and the Big John Foundation and is open to the public.

“Pharmacy practitioners are aware that many people abuse psychoactive chemicals, but feel frustrated in helping their patients address the disease state of chemical dependence,” said Dr. Paul Brooks, director of the College’s Office of Postgraduate Continuing Education and Outreach. “This year’s Ansel Symposium focuses on the seriousness of abuse and dependence on addictive substances and how the practice of addiction pharmacy is applied to assist patients and families, who suffer from chemical dependency."

The four sessions are: “Highjacking of the Brain: Neurobiology and Pharmacology of Addiction,” “Practice of Addiction Pharmacy,” “What’s This? The Identification of Unknown Substances of Abuse,” and “Treatment Options for Recovery and Relapse.” Each session lasts for 1.5 hours and offers 0.15 continuing education units. For information on objectives, lecturers and registration, see the College of Pharmacy Continuing Education and Outreach website at www.rxugace.com.
