Overview of the Program
Regulatory Affairs Professionals are employed in:
- Healthcare product industry
- Biotechnology
- Government
- Academia
They are involved in a range of services related to the manufacturing and testing of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, in vitro diagnostics, biologics, veterinary products, combination products, biotechnology, nutritional products, and cosmetics. Due to the rapidly expanding biotechnology industry, there is a substantial need for additional highly trained professionals ready to perform the work required within this specialized industrial sector.
Education and professional development are critical to the Regulatory Affairs Professional, who must keep up-to-date with regulatory law, policies and procedures for one or more product lines as well as maintain an understanding of the scientific and technical background of new products.
This program offers credit courses at the University of Georgia Gwinnett Campus from UGA's College of Pharmacy leading to 1) a UGA RA Graduate Certificate and, if a student completes additional graduate courses, 2) a Master of Science in Pharmacy (an existing UGA degree) with an emphasis in Regulatory Affairs. Development of the Regulatory Affairs pathway is guided by the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents' economic development objective, where a combination of non-credit certificate courses followed by a series of credit courses can lead to the advanced degree.
Online Graduate Program
Course work delivery for both pathways employs a combination of distance learning templates and weekend sessions specifically geared for the needs of working adult students. Both pathways are
part-time programs, i.e., courses are to be taken on a part-time basis. All courses are taught on-line and are 15-16 weeks in length (11 weeks for summer courses).
The University of Georgia (UGA) College of Pharmacy is presented with a unique opportunity to fill an immediate industry need to educate and develop Regulatory Affairs Professionals for local Georgia companies. A proposal submitted to the Board of Regent's Intellectual Capital Partnership Program (ICAPP) was approved to establish a graduate level certificate program and a Master of Science degree option. On January 28, 2004, the Board of Regents announced its approval and participation through its press office, USG Officials Announce New ICAPP Bioscience Partnership.
