PHRM 5720 Medicine Clerkship: Syllabus

Course Description

This course is designed to provide students with a core understanding of disease states encountered in medicine.  It will stress the application of therapeutics in patient care.  The course will expose students to the team concept of health care in order to heighten their awareness of the role of pharmaceutical care in current medicine.
 

Competencies/Objectives

  1. Discuss basic pathophysiology and clinical manifestations of disease states.
  2. Evaluate pertinent clinical and diagnostic laboratory tests as they relate to individual patient care.
  3. Analyse and discuss appropriate drug therapy and treatment plan as it relates to the following:
    • Rational drug therapy
    • Dosage
    • Route of administration
    • Pharmacokinetic characteristics
    • Major adverse effects
    • Major precautions or contraindications
    • Drug interactions
    • Alternative drug therapy
    • Therapeutic endpoint
  4. Utilize drug information/ retrieval skills in the provision of patient care.
  5. Identify, research and help solve pharmacotherapy-related problems.
  6. Monitor the appropriateness ,safety, and efficacy of prescirpbed drug regimens.
  7. Communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing, pharmacotherapy evalutations recommendations.
  8. Present patient cases in a logical fashion including reason for admission, medication history, and pertinent aspects of the physical examination and medical history.
  9. Discuss the pathopysiology and pharmacotherapy of acute and chronic diseases commonly encountered on a general medicine service.
  10. Interact with patients and health care personnel in a mature, professional manner.
 
Daily Activities
  1. Maintain patient clinical monitoring record.
  2. Review patient charts and medication administration records.
  3. Participate in medical rounds.
  4. Attend scheduled meetings with preceptor.
  5. Attend and participate on work rounds and attending rounds Monday through Friday, attend Medicine Noon Conferences, Clincial Conference, and Grand Rounds.
  6. May be required to participate in patient care on weekends, holidays, and earlier or later than 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. depending on patient care activities.
  7. Periodical meetings with preceptor on an individual basis to discuss patient care and student progress.
