--------The Nontraditional Doctor of Pharmacy Pathway Program--------

Course Delivery

Courses will be conducted using distance learning delivery methods including print, videotape, teleconference, Internet, and videoconference.  A majority of course work utilizes web-based instructional delivery methods.  However, not all courses or workshops will be presented using distance learning technology and it will be necessary to meet at either the UGA or Mercer campus periodically.  In addition, travel to regional proctored test sites is required for most courses.

The curriculum will consist of two parts: Foundation Skills Courses and Disease Management Courses. The Foundation Skills Courses represent broad areas of study that will serve to prepare the student for the Disease Management Courses. The Disease Management Courses integrate didactic, application, and experiential learning. Each course represents a series of disease state categories sequenced into self-study, guided, and experience exercises. In addition, students will be required to complete selected projects that will help them master objectives that require hands-on skills.

During each Disease Management Module, students will be required to develop and implement pharmaceutical care plans, and provide patient education and counseling for a minimum number of patients with various conditions. These patients may be followed at the student’s own practice site; however, since pharmaceutical care must be provided to patients with varying conditions, the student will likely need to follow patients in other practice sites such as in the practice site of a preceptor or fellow student. Students will implement and communicate these plans to other health care professionals, monitor and document the response of patients using these plans, make necessary modifications and assess and document health outcomes resulting from their plans. Each of these clerkships should be completed in a time-frame that assures adequate progression in the program.

In addition to clerkships associated with Disease Management Modules, supplementary general medicine clerkship experiences are required. Depending on the student’s background and experience, the student is required to spend 4-8 weeks or longer outside the student's work-site(s) with a preceptor to model the approach for patient care required for clerkship experiences.
