MERC RULES

GENERAL:

No food or drink is allowed in the MERC. This includes the computer workstation areas, the library tables, and the study area.

The MERC is intended for computer and study use. Please understand if we ask you to quiet down.

COMPUTER AREA:

Computer use is on a first-come first-serve basis. We do not have a waiting list.

The MERC computer lab is a UCNS (University Computing and Network Services) lab. Therefore, we must follow the same rules as every other lab on campus. The policies are summarized at the website http://www.uga.edu/compsec/use.html.

Please do not copy, install, or use any software or data files in violation of applicable copyrights or license agreements. Please do not install any software on the MERC computers. This is a serious concern because of all the viruses floating about. Please realize that installing any software on computers can seriously hinder the workings of computers and the entire lab.

Do not alter computer settings by adding or changing the wallpaper, screen saver, or icons.

Reviewing pornographic, erotic, or other obscene materials is prohibited. The University's sexual harassment policy prohibits you from displaying and/or viewing sexually explicit material which interferes with anyone's work or academic performance or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working or academic environment.

It is in violation of UCNS and MERC rules to read, alter, or delete any other person's computer files or electronic mail.

Deceptive communication, such as sending an email in another's name or under a pseudonym is not permitted, and is, in fact, against the law.

Never leave your workstation logged on - regardless of how brief you will be away from the computer. Someone could review your work or send email messages using your account (even though that is against the rules...)

Please begin to bring your work to a close 15 minutes prior to closing time. The MERC closes promptly at 8:00 p.m. M-Th and 5:00 p.m. on Fridays.

Thank you for your adherence to these guidelines and for reading this far. If you have questions or concerns, please contact:
