Welcome to Our Website
Welcome to the College and your new home on the Web at http://www.rx.uga.edu. We're in the process of remodeling, but the new
site will be built separately from the current site, so you don't have to put up with the confusion of on-site construction.
Satellite campuses will have pages on the new site, so don't worry if your program doesn't have a page yet. Please contact
the webmaster if you have information to put online before the new site has been completed. We'll be happy to accommodate
your request.
If you need help navigating our current site, please contact the webmaster, Jeanne Prine, at jprine@rx.uga.edu or 706-542-5354.
If you need help with setting up a new computer, using our e-mail system, installing F-secure or deleting a virus, please
contact adminhelp@rx.uga.edu. Brad Brown will route your request to the appropriate computer support person. It's very
important to direct your request to adminhelp@rx.uga.edu first, since your computer problem could be network-related.
Brad will be able to "triage" your request quickly and effectively!
As your Webmaster, I'm here to maintain the Web server securely, create new Web pages and subsites, edit existing pages and
subsites, and provide support for WebCT. Any time you need help with any of the above, please let me know. I can be reached
directly by phone or e-mail. My office is on the first floor in Room 152-C, if you'd like to stop by.
I'd like to welcome you by passing on some important information and URLs that can go a long way
toward making your Web experience safe and reliable. The Internet and the Web are an integral part of our working lives,
and, for me, they're like "home," but we ALL need to take precautions to keep that home and its
network neighborhood secure. You really are your own first and best line of defense when it comes
to computer and Internet security.
Here are some security tips and security-related URLs to bookmark:
1. Install F-secure (or the anti-virus software of your choice) on your office and home
computers. It's available free from EITS here at UGA. Go to www.virus.uga.edu to download
F-secure. And once it's installed, BE SURE TO GO BACK REGULARLY TO UPDATE YOUR VIRUS DEFINITIONS! Bookmark the EITS Anti-Virus page,
or make it your browser's home page. Note: Mac users may want to order Norton Anti-virus at a discount from MSD at
www.msd.uga.edu.
2. To prevent and clean up spyware, install either Spybot Search and Destroy from PepiMK Software or Ad-aware from Lavasoft. Both
are free and easy to install. Use regularly as directed. Spyware can slow down or even crash your Web browser--not to mention violating
your privacy and stealing bandwidth.
For Spybot Search and Destroy, go to http://spybot.safer-networking.de/.
For Ad-aware, go to http://www.lavasoft.de.
3. Faculty and staff members at the College use a variety of e-mail software. Once you have the software of your choice
installed, check with adminhelp about the best security settings. This is especially important if you decide to use
Outlook or Outlook Express. These products are not necessarily secure "out of the box" and need to be configured for your protection.
4. NEVER, EVER open unexpected file attachments. Make that a rule to avoid any viruses that may get past your anti-virus scanner.
Following that rule can save you more trouble than you can imagine!
5. Learn to use Windows Update and go back regularly. If your computer uses Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 3 or 4), then you can take advantage of its automatic
update feature. Otherwise, bookmark www.microsoft.com/security. Tip: Make this your browser's homepage and you'll remember
to stay up-to-date on security news and patches. Or go directly to Windows Update at
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp.
6. EITS has a good PowerPoint presentation on viruses online at
www.eits.uga.edu/antivirus/viruspresent/viruspresent.htm.
Take a few minutes to watch it and learn the basics of virus and spyware protection--or much
more. Highly recommended!
7. Regular file backups go a long way toward maintaining your peace of mind. If you want
to go one step further, create a virus-free start-up disk for your pc and keep it in a safe
place. Contact adminhelp if you need assistance. If your computer is ever disabled by
a virus, you can use this disk to start it again.
8. There's a great online free virus scanner at Trend Micro called "Housecall." You can use
it anytime you're at a computer that's not running anti-virus software--or before you get
F-secure installed. You can also use it for a "second opinion" if you think you have a virus
that F-secure hasn't found. Housecall is usually ahead of the curve when it comes to
the latest virus definitions. Go to www.trendmicro.com
and follow the easy instructions to run Housecall.
9. EITS has created an online security page at
www.infosec.uga.edu. Don't miss this excellent resource!
10. Take a look at "10 Anti-Virus Rules" from SecurityFocus at
www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1288.
Happy and Secure Computing!
