Accomplishments

 

Dr. Chu and his collaborators discovered five chemotherapeutic agents (see structures below) against cancer, AIDS and hepatitis B virus, out of which three compounds are currently undergoing clinical trials and two are at the preclinical stage.

Ø     In the spring of 2003, L-OddC (Troxatyl) has entered the Phase II clinical trials as anticancer agent against various forms of cancer.

Ø     DAPD (Amdoxovir), a dual antiviral agent for AIDS and hepatitis B virus, is currently undergoing Phase II clinical trials as anti-HIV agent.

Ø     L-FMAU (Clevudine) is undergoing Phase III clinical trials as anti-HBV agent. It is found to be extremely potent in woodchucks and clinical studies.

Ø     DOT was discovered as an anti-HIV agent for drug resistant HIV mutants. It is under preclinical stage.
