Research Interests:

Dr. Ergul`s laboratory is focused on both clinical and experimental research. One project involves the delineation of structural determinants involved in the processing of big endothelin-1 to endothelin-1, the most potent vasoconstrictor substance at present, by endothelin converting enzyme-1. Clinical projects focus on the role of endothelin-1 and its receptors in various clinical settings including coronary artery bypass grafting, chronic occlusive peripheral arterial disease, diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Ergul is particularly interested in the racial and gender factors involved in the regulation of the endothelin system and currently evaluating whether this system contributes to the increased incidence of hypertension and related complications in African American patients using novel endothelin receptor antagonists.
