ANNUAL REPORT (2000-2001)

2000-2001 UGA-AAPS Annual Report

Elections were held in the Spring of 2000.  The present (2000-2001) officers of the Executive Council are as follows:
 Chair:  Stacy (Cross) Brown
 Vice Chair: Jason Boyd
 Secretary: Nandita Bose
 Treasurer: Meredith Storms
Dr. Anthony Capomacchia continues to hold the position of the Faculty Advisor.

Renewal for UGA student organization status through the Department of Student Activities was completed for the 2000-2001 school year was completed in September 2000.  Additional renewal for the 2001-2002 school year was completed in May 2001.  The Department of Student Activities officially recognizes UGA-AAPS as student organization of the University of Georgia.

Our chapter website was updated this year by Jason Boyd.  Jason also worked on updating the chapter constitution which is currently being reviewed by the chapter’s members.

The UGA-AAPS chapter planned activities this year to help increase awareness of the national organization of AAPS by heavily utilizing the AAPS Visiting Scientist Program.  We sponsored speakers from GlaxoSmithKline, Astra-Zeneca, and DuPont Pharmaceuticals.  This, along with a resume seminar from UGA Career Services, also helped increase awareness of pharmaceutical job opportunities.  The chapter also sponsored two other seminars during the year to help ensure additional educational opportunities in the pharmaceutical sciences. These included a seminar by Dr. Steve Stice from the UGA Department of Agriculture entitled “Recent Advances in Cloning and Stem Cell Technology” and a seminar about the structure of the FDA and USP by Dr. Roger Williams, the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the United States Pharmacopeia.

In April 2001, we coordinated a visit to Solvay Pharmaceuticals in Marietta, GA.  We had 9 graduate students attend and were able to tour the facility and interact with employees from several departments.

As a result of several requests by students, UGA-AAPS compiled a collection of mock NIH grants that various students had used for their qualifying exams for the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Georgia.  This collection is available in the student computer lab and will continue to be updated as additional students are willing to donate their exams.

Elections were held in the Spring of 2001.  The upcoming (2001-2002) officers of the Executive Council are as follows:
 Chair:  Meredith Storms
 Vice Chair: Emily Ware
 Secretary: David Delinsky
Dr. Anthony Capomacchia continues to hold the position of the Faculty Advisor.

The focus of AAPS-UGA Student Chapter this past year was to increase student participation in AAPS and to increase awareness of career opportunities in the pharmaceutical sciences.  At the first chapter meeting, we listed priorities brought up by the students as to what they wanted the AAPS student chapter to bring to them that year.  Throughout the year, we tried to address as many concerns as we could, and have retained all suggestions for the 2001-2002 year.  For the 2001-2002, we plan to continue this focus by sponsoring additional guests from industry and academia in an attempt to get a broad range of exposure for the students.

This report is respectfully submitted by the UGA-AAPS Executive Council,
