The VisionPlus Campaign
The pharmaceutical industry continues to grow at an increasing rate, as does the demand for qualified pharmacists. The University of Georgia is one of only three institutions in the state that offer the Pharm D. degree, the highest level of pharmaceutical training.
The College of Pharmacy is now in its second century of preparing students to be future leaders of pharmacy. At present over 500 undergraduate and 70 graduate students receive their training in the Robert C. Wilson Pharmacy Building, which was constructed in 1963 to house 300 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. Clearly, the needs of the College have long exceeded the capacity of the original facility.
The College of Pharmacy is home to world-class research, ranging from the study of anti-cancer agents and anti-HIV compounds to the study of the genetic impact of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. In February 2005, a new Center for Drug Discovery was approved. Yet laboratory space within the College--originally designed only for instruction--does not support the growing demands of graduate and faculty research. At present the College lags significantly behind the national standard in square footage provided for research.
The VisionPlus Campaign seeks to help fund an addition to the current building at a time when it is critically needed. A new facility will ensure that the College of Pharmacy can offer state-of-the art instructional areas, recruit the best faculty and students, provide excellent service, and continue to expand its program of fruitful new research.
