Senior Director, Center for Organic and Medicinal Chemistry
The Center for Organic and Medicinal Chemistry (COMC) at RTI International is a diverse research group primarily engaged in drug discovery; it also provides grant and contract-based services in organic synthesis, radiosynthesis, pharmacology, and natural products research to government and commercial clients. The current staff of sixty scientists has expertise in medicinal and organic chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacognosy and molecular biology research. The group is also engaged in developing, patenting, and commercializing intellectual property. Staying competitive requires that the research staff and its Director keep current with science and technologies in their respective fields, as well as to keep abreast of the external business environment. Thus, the development and maintenance of scientific stature, access to state-of-the-art technologies and the ability to integrate these into multidisciplinary research projects are critical to the success of COMC.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President of the Science and Engineering Group, the Senior Director of COMC will be charged with leading one of RTI’s most progressive research Centers. The Director will oversee a dynamic group of medicinal chemists and pharmacologists interested in working in a collaborative environment. Medicinal and natural products chemistry in COMC has been highly regarded for over 30 years. Over the last ten years COMC has developed expertise in CNS, cancer and cystic fibrosis pharmacology and molecular biology. The entry into new research areas is partially supported by RTI research and development funds and a yearly budget for minor and capital equipment. The combination of medicinal chemistry and pharmacology leaves COMC well positioned to compete for government-funded drug discovery projects. These projects have led to the discovery of the anticancer compounds, camptothecin and taxol, and NIH grants to fund development through Phase I clinical trials of our proprietary monoamine uptake inhibitor, RTI-336, and our kappa opioid selective antagonist, JDTic.
COMC also has extensive experience conducting contract chemistry services for government and commercial clients. These long-term contracts are instrumental in supporting a large base of diverse chemistry services.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide scientific, technical and administrative leadership for COMC
- Participate at the senior management level to position the growth of COMC, consistent with the strategic vision of RTI International
- Develop and drive strategies to expand and enhance COMC’s position in the drug discovery marketplace
- Develop and nurture relationships with external investigators, organizations, and research sponsors to extend RTI capabilities to compete for and obtain research funding.
- Develop research proposals and lead projects
Requirements and Experience:

- Minimum of fifteen years of overall research experience
- Minimum of 10 years in a similar leadership role responsible for leading a progressive research organization
- A proven leader in their research area, including a demonstrated track record of publications, presentations, patents, and contacts in the scientific community.
- Have successfully obtained funding such as R01 or center grants from federal agencies, preferably NIH.
- Experience working with commercial clients

- Have a track record of creating and leading multidisciplinary scientific teams.
- Have genuine interest and experience in people management
- Excellent communication skills are essential.
- Have experience in business development, including ability to assess current client needs, devise strategies to expand current clients/markets, and monitor competitive environments.
- Must have strong contacts within government funding agencies and commercial clients.
- Knowledge of the patent process and the out licensing of technologies are desirable.
